Ossuccio is a tiny municipality in the Province of Como which is in the Italian region Lombardy. It lies on the western shore of the lake and has a population of just under a thousand people. Isola Comancina, which is a small wooded island on the lake, also falls within the Ossuccio territory and has many interesting archeological sites.
Ossuccio is probably most well known for the Sacro Monte, which was a site of worship and a popular place to be visited by pilgrims. It is a really pretty village and has a lovely lakeside location. It is most recognisable for two unusual bell towers which are prominent on the lake front at Ossuccio. One, in the shape of a sail, is that of S. Giacomo and the other is the Moorish tower of the Church of S. Maria Maddalena ad Ospedaletto. The village does have a beach and sun bathing area and a Market, which sells everything, is held here every Tuesday. It is also an ideal starting point for walkers. One walk in particular is quite steep, which passes fourteen baroque churches and leads to the 'Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso', which is mentioned in Pilgrims Progress. There are also many well known Villas to visit locally, especially the imposing 'Villa del Balbiano' and the 'Villa Leoni'. | |
